RNLI and Macmillan Cancer Support install Kell server cabinets as cost-effective alternative to dedicated server rooms

Charities benefit from lower costs, reduced power consumption and low noise

Marlow, UK, September 16th, 2010: Kell Systems has announced that two of the UK’s leading charities, the RNLI and Macmillan Cancer Support, have benefited from its server cabinets. Kell server cabinets enable the deployment of servers and network hardware directly in the office workspace, removing the need for dedicated computer rooms and thus dramatically reducing costs, electricity consumption and CO2 emissions.

For Macmillan Cancer Support, Kell donated a PSE18 server cabinet for use in the charity's new office in St Neots, Cambridgeshire. As the office is open plan, the Kell cabinet means Macmillan can put its servers in the main office without building a dedicated computer room.

"While the Kell cabinet was donated, we compared how much it would have costed versus the alternatives, and the cabinet would have been cheaper than the air conditioning alone – before we even started to factor in computer room building and maintenance costs," said Ian Humphreys, ICT Infrastructure Project Manager at Macmillan Cancer Support.

"There’s no noticeable heat or noise from the cabinet, and when we need to put any servers or network devices in another office, we'll look first at using a Kell cabinet," said Humphreys.

Kell also provided a PSE12 server cabinet to the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI). This was installed by Hull-based IT company Fibrestream, as part of a project to provide high speed broadband for RNLI at Britain’s only full-time lifeboat station at Spurn Point, East Yorkshire. The lifeboat crews, who are based at the station for days at a time, now have access to a 100Mbps fibre-optic internet connection, which has replaced the previous slow dial-up link.

In typical usage, Kell's cabinets reduce server noise by up to 83%, CO2 emissions by 96.5%, floor space by 90%, operating costs by 98%, and capital costs by up to 80% (compared to a server room).
